If you’re in the market for a holiday home which won’t cost as much as a medium priced car, then Willerby’s three bedroom Salisbury Select home could be just what you are looking for. Or there’s a two bedroom version it that’s what takes your fancy.

The home sits on a 5 inch painted chassis and has aluminium cladding and a steel pantile roof. A galvanised chassis and PVCu double glazed windows are two options which anyone intending to site the home near the sea or use it during the colder months might find well worth the extra expense. Additionally, if the home is to be surrounded by raised decking, an optional pair of French doors in the end of the lounge wall would not come amiss.

On entering the Salisbury through the front door halfway along the front elevation brings you immediately into the lounge and dining area with the kitchen facing you. Immediately to the right of the doorway is space for a fridge/freezer. To the left of the doorway is the dining area which is furnished for six people. This we have to say is pushing it a bit and if six people were to sit down together we think the table and chairs would need to be moved into the lounge.

The lounge is rectangular and comes complete with two x two seat sofas, one of which becomes a sofa bed at night. There is also a wall mounted fire surround on the home’s back wall into which is fitted an electric fire. Above the fire surround is an open display unit and adjacent to the surround, in the corner, is a base unit and a TV point. There is a second unit in the opposite corner, the space between them – below the window – being taken up by a seat which would be lost if the owner chose to have the French door option. Lighting in the lounge and dining areas is via two pendants suspended from the pitched ceiling, each having five halogen lights.

Behind one of the sofas is a low wall which separates the lounge from the U shaped kitchen. The kitchen is fairly small but considering the price of the home it is adequately equipped with a double oven and four-burner hob above which is an extractor hood fitted with two downlights. On the back wall is the sink and drainer unit, and running long the aforementioned low wall with the lounge, is another base unit with plenty of working top space. Above this unit is a cantilevered wall unit projecting from the home’s rear wall and supported by a column down onto the worktop at its front end. There’s also a dedicated space for a microwave, plus plenty of shelving and storage space in the cupboards and drawers. A unit with three adjustable halogen lights has been fitted to the ceiling.

From the kitchen a door leads into the other half of the home. Immediately on the left is the third bedroom. Although small it has two divan beds separated by a bedside cabinet whilst above each headboard is a wall cupboard. There is also a wardrobe on the wall above the right-hand bed, which although small does offer some space for clothes which would otherwise have to be stored elsewhere in the home.

Next to the third bedroom is the home’s second bedroom. This too, is fairly small and is almost identical to the third bedroom, the main difference being that the wardrobe has been fitted above the bottom of the left-hand bed. Across the corridor from the two bedrooms is the toilet compartment – again small but having a small pedestal washbasin in addition to the low level toilet suite.

Adjoining the toilet compartment is the shower room. This has two entrances; one from the corridor and one from the main bedroom at the end of the home. It has a large shower cubicle with a thermostatically controlled shower, as well as a large washbasin set into a base unit with toiletry storage. On the party wall with the toilet compartment is a low level toilet suite.

The main bedroom has a kingsize double bed with lift-up storage. Above the headboard is open shelving and two cupboards and in the corner of the room is a built-in wardrobe plus a freestanding tallboy with six drawers. All three bedrooms have blown-air plinth heating.

Main features

5Inch painted chassis

Blown air plinth heaters to bedrooms

Verdict

Willerby has long had a reputation for offering value for money and this is nowhere better seen than in the three bedroom Salisbury Select. It has all the necessaries to make holidaying in it a real pleasure. It also has a host of optional extras for the buyer with a bit of extra in the bank and who wants to use the home throughout the whole 12 months. Hence we consider it good value for money from one of the country’s longest established not to mention, leading holiday home manufacturers.

The 39ft x 12ft two bedroom Ridgeway holiday home is one of 15 models which Carnaby is producing for this year. There are in fact three main ranges: Melrose; Ridgeway; and Rosedale, plus a single Highgrove model being the fourth. Within the Ridgeway range are one 34ft x 12ft model, two 37ft x 12ft models – one of which has three bedrooms – and two 39ft x 2ft versions, one having two bedrooms and one three bedrooms. The model reviewed here is the 39ft x 12ft two bedroom home.

Externally, the Ridgeway has aluminium cladding but plastic is an option. So too is an environmental green finish. A painted chassis is standard but again there are two options – pre-galvanised and fully galvanised. UPVC double glazing is standard as is the steel pantile pitched roof. Slightly unusually, there is no option to have a patio or French doors, either in the front elevation or in the end wall of the lounge. Instead, the lounge end wall comprises a bay with a large centre window and a smaller one at each side of it.

The home’s single entrance is about a quarter of the way along the front elevation, the door leading immediately into the lounge area with the dining area to the right and the kitchen opposite. As a result we felt that the lounge area was not particularly large but, on the other hand, it did have U shaped wrap around seating from just beyond the door, across the bay and along the rear wall It is also worth mentioning that the seat below the bay window makes into an additional bed so that the home can actually sleep six people.

From the home’s back wall a low level, angled, party wall extends into the lounge area separating the lounge from the kitchen. A very attractive electric fire has been fitted on the angled section of the party wall, supplementing the wet central heating which is standard to the home. Freestanding furniture includes a nest of tables and a storage cabinet. A pendent light with three branches has been suspended from the pitched ceiling supplemented by two ceiling downlights.

The dining area, to the right of the entrance, has an oval table and four chairs as standard. Above the table is a second three branch pendant light. Opposite the table is the kitchen which we felt was one of the home’s best features. Although fairly small, it has a four burner gas hob, grill and oven, plus an extractor hood, and a fridge/freezer – all as standard. The sink unit runs along the home’s back wall to a tall window unit. The inclusion of a base unit on the low level party wall with the lounge, means that there is an adequate amount of working top space. We also felt that there was sufficient storage in the base units and wall cupboards. The one thing we weren’t sure of was whether the light bar on the ceiling with three adjustable halogen lights would be sufficient.

Going through the door from the kitchen brings you to the shower room on your right. This has a large shower cubicle but the room then tapers to the opposite wall where the toilet has been fitted. The shower unit is thermostatically controlled with the washbasin being fitted immediately next to the cubicle. Generally, we considered the shower room to be adequate but would have liked to see a bit more storage for toiletries.

Opposite the shower room is the home’s second bedroom which comes complete with two divan beds. Between the beds is a cabinet and behind them a panel on which have been mounted padded headboards – a most attractive feature. A wall unit with four cupboards has been mounted above the headboards whilst opposite the foot of the beds is a built-in unit containing two wardrobes separated by a dressing table.

At the end of the corridor is the door into the main bedroom. The bedroom spans the width of the home with a double bed on the end wall. To the right as you enter is a base unit with two cupboards and three drawers, next to which is a small en suite washroom and toilet. Above the bed is a row of wall units with further ones along the home’s back wall and the wall opposite the foot of the bed.

Main features

Painted chassis

UPVC double glazing

Wet radiator heating

Fridge/freezer

Thermostatically controlled shower

En suite washroom and toilet to main bedroom

Verdict

The Carnaby Ridgeway 39ft x 12ft two bedroom holiday home isn’t going to set the world alight. Externally, it doesn’t appear much different from many similar homes from other manufacturers. But that said, it does offer good value for money coming as it does with double glazing and central heating as standard. The kitchen too, is more than adequate, as are the two bedrooms both of which have plenty of storage space for clothes. We did feel however, that the lounge area was somewhat smaller than we would have liked although it did have plenty of seating, including one sofa which makes up into a bed when necessary. So our overall impression was that this is a holiday home owners will find to their liking.

The Moselle is one of the Swift Group’s five model range of holiday homes. It comprises four two bedroom models and one three bedroom. All are single units starting at 30ft x 12ft rising to 38ft x 12ft. The model reviewed here is the penultimate one in the range, 38ft x 12ft two bedroom home.

The standard chassis is painted to BS EN ISO 12944 but a fully galvanised one is available for an extra £530. We would strongly recommend paying the extra if the home is to be sited on a park by the sea where the salt in the atmosphere can cause corrosion problems. The home has a coated steel pantile roof, woodgrain textured sandstone aluminium cladding, plus GRP bargeboards and window canopies. Double glazing and central heating are options. Other options include environmental green cladding, dark green windows, doors and gutters instead of the white ones supplied as standard.

Externally there is little to distinguish the Moselle from many other holiday homes. In the end wall of the lounge area is a large window unit which can be changed to a pair of patio doors – and at extra cost. The main entrance is midway along the front elevation and on going into the home, there is a cupboard containing the gas boiler immediately on the right, followed by an integrated double door fridge/freezer, whilst to the left is the dining area forming part of the lounge. Opposite the entrance is the kitchen.

The U shaped kitchen is well appointed with a gas hob, oven and grill, all with electronic ignition. Above the hob is a stainless steel recirculation hood and we were pleased to note that there is a splashback on the wall behind the hob. There are wall cupboards either side of the cooker hood and in the corners at either end of the sink unit on the home’s back wall. To the left of the sink unit, there is a long base unit mounted on a low wall separating the kitchen from the lounge. Above the base unit, a cantilevered wall unit projects from the back wall and is supported at its outer end by a circular pillar down onto the worktop. It is also worth noting that in addition to the light in the ceiling there are also lights mounted on the underside of the wall units.

The dining area comes equipped with a rectangular table and four chairs whilst the lounge has an L shaped pull out sofa bed and arm chair. On the home’s front wall, forward of the dining table, in a fire surround with a lava rock electric fire, next to which is a corner storage unit with a TV point. A freestanding coffee table is also standard to the home. Night time lighting comprises wall and ceiling downlights plus a pendant light over the dining table.

From the kitchen a door leads into the corridor, the shower room being the first door on the right. The shower cubicle has a thermostatically controlled shower and runs the full depth of the room with the low level toilet and washbasin facing it. There is a very attractive unit with open shelving behind the toilet, whilst the washbasin has been mounted on a base unit with room for storing toiletries below it. On the wall above the washbasin is a cabinet with a mirror door and further storage room.

Opposite the shower room is the second bedroom containing two divan beds and a small wardrobe. Between the beds is a small bedside cabinet with a 13 amp socket above it. On the wall behind the beds is a simulated timber headboard, above which are four good size wall cupboards to supplement the storage in the wardrobe sited at the foot of the bed on the outside wall. Opposite the foot of the bed on the party wall with the corridor is a framed mirror with a narrow shelf below it.

The main bedroom at the end of the home has a double bed with two bedside cabinets. As in the case of the second bedroom there is a simulated timber headboard with a row of wall cupboards above it. Opposite the foot of the bed are two double wardrobes separated by a small cupboard and open shelf, whilst to the left of the doorway as you enter is a dressing table complete with a stool. To the right of the doorway is an en suite toilet. This is has to be said, is fairly small but when you consider the overall size of the home and its price, we felt it one of the best features of the Moselle.

Main features

Painted chassis

Vaulted ceilings throughout

Four burner hob, grill and oven, both with electronic ignition

Thermostatically controlled shower

En suite toilet to main bedroom

Verdict

The Swift Group only entered the holiday home market six years ago, but since then has certainly made its mark. The Moselle range is without doubt well designed and built and we especially liked the fact that it has an en suite toilet to the main bedroom plus. We were equally impressed by the inclusion of a large fridge/freezer as standard. Although the Moselle doesn’t have double glazing and central heating we believe it will prove popular with a considerable number of buyers looking for a quality holiday home at an affordable price.

Specification

Standard: EN 1647 Grade II

Size: 38ft x 12ft

Bedrooms: 2

This Willerby Westmorland is a 35ft x 12ft holiday home built to EN 1647. Externally it is clad in aluminium and has a steel pantile roof. It comes in two versions, the standard with windows in the end wall of the lounge, and the Outlook in which the windows are replaced by a pair of French doors. Other options include a galvanised chassis instead of a painted one, PVCu double glazing and central heating. It has three bedrooms but sleeps eight thanks to the pull out sofa bed in the lounge. We should also mention that there are blown air plinth heaters in each of the three bedrooms.

The entrance into the home leads into the kitchen area with the dining and lounge areas to the left as you enter. Separating the dining area from the entrance is an angled base unit with three cupboards. Standard furniture in the dining area comprises a rectangular table with two stool and fixed seating along the wall. The seating in fact, runs the length of the wall to the corner of the lounge area where it turns through 90 degrees to the French doors at the other side of which is a corner settee. Next to the corner settee – along the home’s back wall – is a TV cabinet beyond which projects an angled wall on which is an electric fire.

The kitchen is basically L shaped except for another wall which is angled off the home’s rear wall. This is where the gas cooker with electronic ignition and a four burner hob have been fitted. Above the hob is an extractor hood. Working surface space in the kitchen is reasonable as is the storage for food and utensils. However, both a microwave and a fridge/freezer are optional extras. Sadly, none of the walls have been tiled, the only concession to fumes and cooking pollutants being a short height glass splashback behind the hob.

Going through the door from the kitchen into a corridor, the first door you come to is the cupboard where the boiler has been fitted. Next to the boiler cupboard is the toilet which it has to be said, is very small. Apart from the toilet the only other units are a pedestal washbasin immediately inside the door and a fan in the ceiling.

Whilst the toilet is small, the shower room next to it is one of the best features in the home. In addition to a large shower cubicle, there is a base unit with a large washbasin sitting on top of it. The base unit is unusual in that it is triangular in shape with the longest side running along the room’s back wall and the two other sides – which are actually doors – projecting into the room to meet at 90 degrees.

Across the corridor from the shower room is the Westmorland’s second bedroom. It has two divan beds with cupboards on the walls above them, and there is also a wardrobe with three drawers below it at the foot of the bed on the outside wall. Opposite the foot of the bed, on the party wall with the corridor, is a framed mirror.

At the end of the home is the main and with the third bedroom next to it. This has two narrow divans, with a bedside cabinet between them and a single gang socket and light switch above it, whilst above each bed is a wall cupboard. There is also a wardrobe mounted on the wall above the foot of the bed on the outside wall of the home. Whilst it is extremely small it is better than nothing offering at least some token storage space for clothing.

The main bedroom has a double bed with and two bedside cabinets plus a wall cupboard at each side of the headboard. Opposite the foot of the bed is a double wardrobe with three drawers below it. Between the wardrobe and the door is a small dressing table made up of a shelf with a mirror on the wall above it, and a small cupboard below it.

Main features

Fixed seating in lounge

Pull out sofa bed

Gas cooker with electronic ignition

Verdict

The Willerby Westmorland is a well worth considering for anyone thinking of buying their first holiday home. Not only is it well designed its price is actually less than you would pay for many cars. Things like double glazing and central heating are optional extras but that won’t stop owners having very comfortable holidays in the home. If we do have one reservation it is that being a single unit, there is not a lot externally to distinguish the home from a great many other single unit holiday homes.

The ABI St David holiday home is one of three new holiday homes for the 2010 season which ABI launched at the Lawns show last September. It comprises two models: 36ft x12ft two bedroom, and a 38ft x12ft three bedroom home. The two bedroom version is reviewed here but many of the features apply equally to the three bedroom model.

The home has a painted chassis as standard but a 5 inch pre-galvanised option is available. The exterior walls are aluminium clad and the home has a pitched pantile roof. In contrast to the cream exterior walls, the windows and doorframes are wood grain effect, with the windows themselves being single glazed although uPVC double glazing is an optional extra. Additionally, there are downlights in the canopy at the end of the home.

The entrance to the home is part way along the front elevation and leads directly into the kitchen area with the dining and lounge areas to the left and the sleeping accommodation to the right. Immediately on the right inside the doorway is an integrated fridge/freezer which comes as standard with the home. Opposite the door is the U shaped kitchen with the sink unit running along the home’s back wall. For a holiday home this competitively priced, we think the kitchen is very well appointed. It has plenty of storage space in the wall and floor cupboards and equipment includes a gas cooker with electronic ignition and a four burner hob and grill, above which is an extractor hood. Wood effect flooring and graphite worktops complete a very attractive kitchen.

The dining area basically forms part of the lounge and is immediately on the left as you enter the home. It has a table and four chairs as standard. Seating in the lounge comprises wrap round sofas, one of which has a pull out bed so that the home can actually sleep six. The main sofa runs along the home’s back wall with a wing at either end – one partway along the end wall and the other along the back of the kitchen unit which separates the kitchen from the lounge. In the home reviewed, there is also an optional patio door in the end wall. On the home’s front wall, facing the sofas is an electric fire set into a very attractive surround. A mirror forms part of the standard surround although in this home it had been replaced by a large flat screen TV. Lighting in the lounge, dining and kitchen areas is mainly halogen ceiling lights although there is a pendant light above the dining table.

A door from the kitchen leads into the corridor with the home’s shower room being the first door on the right. The room has a large shower cubicle with a thermostatic mixer valve, pedestal washbasin and a low level toilet. An extractor fan is an optional extra and there is little in the way of storage facilities for toiletries.

Opposite the shower room is the home’s second bedroom. This has two divan beds with wall cupboards separated by a shelf above the headboards. The wall below the shelf and headboards has been panelled and has a very attractive pair of mounted reading lights. On the wall opposite the foot of the bed is a small wardrobe – something which many two bedroom holiday homes lack.

The main bedroom takes up the full width at the end of the home. It has a kingsize lift up double bed with storage below and in a row of cupboards on the wall above the headboard. On the wall adjacent to the bed is a dressing table with a mirror above it. Opposite the foot of the bed are two built in double wardrobes and a unit containing a drawer and cupboard between them. The upper half of each pair of wardrobe doors contains a framed mirror whilst in the corner of the room next to the wardrobes is a small en suite washroom and toilet.

As mentioned earlier the standard St David home is not double glazed but this is included in an optional winter pack along with full central heating including thermostatic radiator valves, and extra insulation.

Main features

Integrated fridge/freezer

En suite washroom to main bedroom

Sofa bed with pull out

Vaulted ceilings

Cooker with electronic ignition

Verdict

The St David is very well designed and built home with maximum use being made of all the available space. We were particularly impressed by the fact that the second bedroom had its own wardrobe whilst the main one not only had a pair of wardrobes, but also a dressing table and an en suite washroom. The kitchen too, is well equipped with a cooker complete with electronic ignition, and an integrated fridge/freezer, whilst the lounge boasts comfortable wrap round sofa seating. Overall we came away convinced that ABI had another winner on its hands!
