Salad all year round

Don’t waste your cash on supermarket salads, grow your own!

Salad leaves are among the easiest crops to grow in your holiday home garden and you can sow individual varieties or mixtures and easily achieve the same array of colours, types and textures that are sold in those delicious looking supermarket bags.

Home-grown salad leaves will be just as delicious and attractive, look a lot fresher, and will be more flavoursome than those supermarket salad bags. Growing your own will leave more change in your pockets, too.

Best of all, anyone can grow them because you don’t even need a vegetable plot – a pot or growbag on the patio is sufficient.

There are three easy steps to achieve success with this delicious crop. First, sow at regular intervals for a continuous supply of fresh leaves. Second, keep seedlings clean and well watered during their growing season. And third, pick frequently, for the tastiest crop.

From April to mid-August, sowings can be made every two or three weeks outside in drills across the allotment or bed, sown 1.25cm (1/2 in) deep, drawn out using a cane or swan neck hoe, with a spacing of 30cm (12in) between the rows. Or you can sow small batches in containers or growbags on a sunny patio, or in a window box.

Sowing these seeds in succession will ensure a continuous supply of fresh young leaves to pick all summer and they will be ready to harvest 28-30 days from sowing. Water is very important to the success of this crop, because to get the best flavours from your leaves, you must ensure they grow quickly. The quicker they grow, the more succulent and tender they will be.

The leaves can be picked, washed and eaten straight away, when they will be the most nutritious, or they can be washed and placed in a polythene bag in the fridge for 2-3 hours until cool and crunchy.

Whichever way you decide to grow and harvest these leaves, one thing is for sure – they will be just as colourful but far more tasty when added to your other salad ingredients than those purchased from the busy supermarket aisles, and at a fraction of the cost.
