From powerful winter storms to burst pipes, slips in the shower and unexpected fires, 2025 delivered a wide range of insurance claims for static caravan and holiday lodge owners.

We’ve analysed our settled claims from January to December 2025 to reveal the top five most common insurance claims — reinforcing the value of a specialist static caravan insurance policy.
In 2025, the costliest claim of the year, a lodge fire, exceeding a quarter of a million pounds!
And unsurprisingly, January proved to be the most turbulent month, with more than 60% of storm‑related claims reported after Storm Eowyn, when roofs, panels and even entire caravans were damaged or moved by extreme winds.
- Storm and flood damage
Storms were the biggest cause of static caravan and holiday lodge insurance claims in 2025, accounting for nearly four in 10 claims.

The most significant incidents occurred during Storm Eowyn in January, when:
- Roofs were lifted or blown off
- Side panels were ripped away
- Several caravans were shifted or moved by extreme winds
- Falling trees crushed or severely damaged units
More than six in 10 storm claims occurred in January alone.

- Water‑related damage – 24% of claims
Water‑related claims came second, making up almost a quarter of all holiday caravan insurance claims in 2025. With average claims costs amounting to several thousand pounds.
- 72% were for escape of water
- 20% were caused by boilers
- 5% were due to pipework issues
The most severe escape of water claims happened when leaks went unnoticed for long periods, often damaging walls, carpets, furniture and flooring.

Showers were again a key issue, with many claims coming from leaking shower trays, toilet cisterns and washing machines.
Prevention tips
- Fully drain down your static caravan for winter. Her’s our step-by-step guide: www.leisuredays.co.uk/news/video-how-to-drain-down-your-static-caravan-7821
- Disconnect shower heads and mixer taps before draining down and flush the toilet cistern
- Inspect seals and seams regularly
- Service boilers annually

The costliest was when an escape of water caused extensive damage to a static caravan, which couldn’t be repaired. The pay-out for this total loss claim was a whopping £40,000!
- Accidental damage and window damage
Accidental damage came in third, covering everything from internal slips to exterior scrapes.
They made up nearly a quarter (23%) of all settled claims.

Common accidental damage in 2025 included:
- Cracked shower trays from slips or dropped toiletries
- Damage caused by vehicles, including a tractor trailer, cars, and even a snowplough!
- Window damage caused by birds flying into them
- Hot oil spilling onto kitchen flooring
- Irons burning carpets
- Paint spills on sofas and carpets
- Electrical surges damaging boilers and electrical equipment
Accidental damage prevention
- Use anti‑slip mats in showers. See our tips to avoid a slips and trips in your static caravan shower

- Take extra care during cooking, cleaning and decorating
- Caravan fire claims
Fire remains one of the most destructive and costliest holiday caravan claims.

Incidents in 2025 included fires that spread from neighbouring caravans, electrical faults, hot tub equipment issues and internal fires causing extensive damage.
As static caravans built from lightweight materials, even small fires can spread quickly, resulting in high repair or total‑loss payouts.
Static caravan fire prevention
- Test smoke detectors regularly

- Avoid leaving cooking appliances unattended when switched on
- Get your caravan’s electrics serviced at least once every three years
- Keep flammable items away from heaters

- Frozen food claims
Power cuts during stormy weather or winter shutdowns led to a handful of frozen food claims, accounting for three per cent of holiday caravan insurance claims. While low in cost, nobody wants to return to find mouldy food in their freezer! Avoid leaving high-value food in your freezer over winter – just in case!
- Vermin damage
Rats and mice caused some surprisingly expensive claims in 2025. The most expensive vermin claim was a huge £25K after an infestation of rats chewed and soiled carpets, furniture, and mattresses, and left a dreadful stench!

See our video with tips on how to avoid vermin in your static caravan here.
Vermin prevention tips
- Seal gaps and apply wire mesh over vents
- Avoid leaving food behind, especially during the winter months when your caravan is not being used
- Use traps and repellents
- Keep soft furnishings covered and remove bedding, towels and toilet paper
