Keeping your static caravan insurance up-to-date

When taking out insurance for a static caravan or lodge, you’ll need to know the value of your holiday caravan as well as its contents. This is also known as the total sums insured.

You could leave yourself at risk of being under insured if you don’t add up the value of the contents of your static caravan, lodge or chalet, which could mean that certain items are not covered in the event that you need to make an insurance claim.

The value of your contents will likely change over time as you buy new equipment for your holiday caravan or if you make any changes or major modifications. According to our recent poll, many owners have carried out some kind of upgrade to their static caravan or lodge.

Caravan upgrades and new contents

If you do refurbish or make any modernisation changes to your static caravan, such as new furniture, flooring, a verandah, decking, windows, shed or maybe a new kitchen, then it’s vital that you tell your caravan insurance provider. At Leisuredays, we’re flexible when it comes to holiday caravan modifications and simply want to make sure you’re adequately insured by making sure any work is reflected in the value of your caravan structure.

So if you bought your static caravan for £35,000 and paid £8,000 to add a new decked verandah then the insured value of the unit would need to increase to £43,000.

And if you’ve spruced up your caravan and invested in some new contents, such as garden furniture, a gas barbecue, bedding, freestanding furniture, or matching electrical items for the kitchen, then inform your insurer so they can increase your contents sum insured value and make sure these new items are fully covered.

Remember all the things stored in any shed or outdoor storage unit at your holiday caravan too.

It’s worth keeping receipts of any new contents you buy and having a checklist with the value of all the contents of your holiday caravan.

There could be a slight increase in your insurance premium to reflect the added value of any modifications or new purchases, but if your static caravan is damaged by fire, storm or flooding or items are stolen, then you might not be adequately covered when making a claim.

Always check your holiday caravan insurance documents

Your static caravan or lodge insurance policy is a 12-month contract. At Leisuredays we give you 14 days to check all the policy details are correct or you can ask for a refund. If you want to make any changes after this time then a small administration fee will apply, as with most insurance companies. But we do try to keep our fees low at Leisuredays.

We also urge our customers to read their documentation carefully to understand exactly what their static caravan insurance policy provides and what they’re covered for. Not advising your insurance company of any upgrades could invalidate your policy and any future claims,  so it’s always worth making a call to make sure everything is logged, no matter how small the change.
