2014 Swift Moselle holiday lodge review

The Swift Moselle holiday Lodge has been a stalwart of the Swift Group’s range of holiday lodges for several years. For the 2014 season it consists of five models, the one reviewed here being the 38ft x 12ft two bedroom with bath. Built to residential specification BS3636 the lodge has a galvanised fusion chassis carrying a 10 year warranty.

Standard exterior cladding is Canexel high density wood with two other Canexel finishes being available as options. The roof is pantile coated steel with GRP bargeboards, whilst the gutters and downpipes are PVC. Patio doors are standard in the end wall of the lounge area which will necessitate the addition of decking or steps when the lodge is sited.

The front door of the Swift Moselle leads into the kitchen and dining area with the lounge to their left and the sleeping accommodation to the right. Immediately on the right of the door is the cupboard housing the gas central heating boiler followed by a double door integrated fridge/freezer, whilst directly opposite the entry door is the main kitchen area.

Standard appliances include an oven with electronic ignition, a stainless steel recirculating cooker hood above the four burner gas hob – also with electronic ignition – a 11/2 stainless steel sink and drainer, plus a dedicated housing for a microwave. There is an adequate number of wall and floor cupboards, the former having lighting on their undersides. We considered this feature important as we felt that the ceiling lighting could be insufficient for food preparation and cooking.

Next to the low wall separating the kitchen and dining area from the lounge is a fairly small rectangular table and four chairs. Considering that the lodge sleeps four people the amount of room set aside for dining seemed to us to be somewhat cramped to say the least.

Seating in the lounge however, is good comprising as it does a free-standing L shaped layout incorporating a pull-out occasional bed, plus two cube stools which fit under a coffee table. Above the modern style electric fire fitted in a framed fireplace is a large mirror behind which are the connections for a flat screen TV together with Sky+ connection.

Either side of the fireplace are very attractive display units whilst on the opposite wall is a framed picture included as standard in the lodge’s specification.

Adjoining the kitchen is the lodge’s shower room with the second bedroom opposite. In addition to the shower cubicle and thermostatic shower, there is a ceramic washbasin set on top of a toiletry storage cupboard, a dual flush low level toilet and an extractor fan.

In the second bedroom are two divan beds behind which are tall padded headboards. Above the headboards is a row of high level wall cupboards with a fluorescent reading light mounted on their underside. There is also room for a small wardrobe plus a dressing shelf with a framed mirror on the wall above it.

The main bedroom has a double bed with lift up storage, padded headboards, and a row of high level cupboards. In addition it has two reading lights mounted below the cupboards plus two wall-mounted bedside cabinets. Additionally there is a two and a half door wardrobe incorporating three drawers whilst facing the foot of the bed is a unit containing a dressing table with drawers, a mirror and stool.

But the main feature is the en suite which has a bath rather than a shower cubicle. However, for anyone who prefers having a shower instead of a bath, a thermostatic shower head has been mounted on the wall at the end of the bath.

The standard lodge comes with Thermoglas double glazed windows and doors, full central heating supplied by a condensing gas combi boiler. Included in the options is a Lux pack comprising a dishwasher, washing machine and a Velux window in the kitchen. Other options include an iPod docking station/radio with lounge ceiling speakers and remote control, plus positions for a 15” flat screen TV in both bedrooms.

Verdict

The Swift Group is a major player in touring caravans and motorhomes but less so in the holiday and residential lodge market. But that doesn’t mean that its lodges are of less quality and value for money. Indeed, the fact that the Swift Moselle range has been one of its best sellers over the years is proof of the lodge’s popularity with buyers!
