{"id":2312,"date":"2013-10-14T07:40:54","date_gmt":"2013-10-14T07:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/?p=2312"},"modified":"2013-10-14T07:40:54","modified_gmt":"2013-10-14T07:40:54","slug":"how-to-protect-a-holiday-home-during-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/how-to-protect-a-holiday-home-during-winter-2312\/","title":{"rendered":"How to remain fully insured and protect your static caravan or lodge this winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the weather getting colder and winter fast approaching, it\u2019s time to start planning how you are going to protect your holiday caravan.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday caravans are less insulated than houses and residual water can easily freeze, causing pipes to burst, water to escape and damage to your boiler and holiday caravan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Holiday home in winter\" alt=\"hh winter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/hh-winter.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With only a few weeks to go until the cold really sets in, now&#8217;s the time to remind yourself of the simple precautions you need to take to ensure your static caravan or lodge remains fully insured.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions of static caravan and holiday lodge insurance policies for winterisation do vary from insurer to insurer, however for Leisuredays policyholders we request the following precautions are taken:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 1st November \u2013 15th March <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">whilst your park is closed for winter<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn the water off at the stopcock Drain down and winterise all equipment in accordance\u00a0with the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Turn the holiday caravan's water off at the stopcock\" alt=\"Turn the holiday caravan's water off at the stopcock\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/pipes-380.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 1st November \u2013 15th March <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">whilst your park is open, whenever unoccupied<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn the water off at the stopcock<\/li>\n<li>Turn on all taps and the shower to let all water out<\/li>\n<li>Flush toilets, ensuring all water is drained from the cistern<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Let all water drain out of the holiday caravan\" alt=\"Let all water drain out of the holiday caravan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/taps-380.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>You may also want to consider the following precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the central heating system to avoid frost damage<\/li>\n<li>Check anti-freeze levels of sealed central heating systems &#8211; these should not be drained<\/li>\n<li>Drain the hot and cold water system of combi boilers as per the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Set your static caravan's boiler to avoid frost damage\" alt=\"Set your static caravan's boiler to avoid frost damage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leisuredays.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/BOILER.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure exposed piping is adequately lagged<\/li>\n<li>Add a small amount of antifreeze or salt to remaining water in the toilet, sink, bath and shower traps<\/li>\n<li>Leave external water drainage plugs open<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By taking these actions you are ensuring that you minimise damage to your holiday caravan and your policy protects you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Remember:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn off water\u00a0at the stopcock to prevent\u00a0a burst pipe or leak\u00a0becoming a disaster<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Set the heating\u00a0to avoid frost damage<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Drain down &#8211;\u00a0Open caravan drain plugs, turn\u00a0on the taps and shower, flush\u00a0the toilet and remove residual\u00a0water from all equipment.\u00a0Consider asking your park for a\u00a0professional drain down using\u00a0compressed air<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rather than provide detailed technical advice on how to drain down and prepare for winter, <strong>we suggest you to talk to your park, who will be well versed in draining down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other winterisation tips include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Unplug any electrical devices including large white goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remove any bedding, clothing or soft furnishings from the caravan or lodge completely or store them in a place where air can circulate to avoid damage from damp or mould.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Prop open all internal doors and cupboards, and slightly pull out all draws to encourage air to circulate.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remove or hide from view any valuable items such as Televisions or Hi-Fi\u2019s. Then leave curtains open so that any would-be thieves can see such items have been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Completely empty and clean any fridges or freezers and leave switched off with the door slightly ajar. Remember to drain any ice or chilled water dispensers built into your fridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ensure external vents are clear of debris<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remove any food stuffs which might attract vermin (mice etc).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Close and lock all external windows and doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Lubricate door hinges and window locks with a dab of petroleum jelly to ensure they open smoothly when you return.<\/p>\n<p>Have we missed anything?
