What our customers say
Guide to holiday property insurance
What would you do if your holiday home was flooded, targeted by thieves, damaged or vandalised? Without suitable insurance in place, you could be left to stand the bill for repairs and replacements. Here's our quick guide to holiday home insurance.
-
What is the difference between standard home and holiday home insurance cover?
When insuring a holiday home it's important to choose a policy that offers more than standard household cover. Bear in mind that if you hire out the property you will need specific cover to permit this type of usage as well as protect you against damage caused by guests, and you may also want cover for loss of rental income.
Naturally, there will be times when the holiday home is left unoccupied. When taking out a policy remember to let your insurance provider know if the property is likely to be empty for a significant amount of time as certain restrictions may apply. Alternatively, check the limits shown in your policy booklet for further clarification.

What types of holiday homes can Leisuredays cover?

- Holiday cottages
- Apartments
- Flat and felt roof properties
Please note, we cannot cover properties with thatched roofs.

What are the key cover features I should look for?
Holiday home insurance will protect your investment from the effects of fire, storm and flood. Crucially though, it should provide cover for subsidence and cases of liability. You should also look for cover that protects against common claims such as malicious acts, vandalism, falling trees and branches, escape of water and theft.
-
What specific cover is provided for hiring out?
If you hire out your holiday home to paying guests, naturally, you'll want to make sure that the property is again covered for any eventuality. Pay particular attention to cover for malicious acts, theft or attempted theft, vandalism and accidental damage cover as these risks could prove greater when hiring out.
Loss of rent cover, legal cover and public liability cover are also extremely beneficial to those hiring out who require complete peace of mind when accommodating guests.
It's also worth knowing that if you do rent out the property, you must ensure that you complete all the relevant safety checks as required by law. Although this won't affect your insurance, it means that if something were to go wrong, you wouldn't be held accountable. See the gov.uk website for further details.

How can I find the right policy for my needs?
Holiday home owners have varied requirements. We give customers the option to insure their property in one of three ways: buildings only cover, contents only cover or combined cover - having these options is a great way of ensuring you only pay for the cover you need.
If you own more than one holiday home it makes sense to opt for a policy that allows you to cover the whole portfolio in one go. Leisuredays can cover up to four properties under one policy, we even provide extra discounts for each property you insure, so the more holiday lets you own, the more you could save on your insurance!
How do I know how much to insure the property for?
We provide cover for contents up to £40,000 on a new for old basis, which covers household goods, sports equipment, high risk items, business equipment and money kept inside the property. Look for high levels of buildings cover too for added reassurance.
When calculating the value for buildings insurance it's important never to underestimate. Remember to factor in fixtures and fittings, patios, paved terraces, footpaths, tennis courts, swimming pools, garden ponds, statues and fountains permanently fixed into the ground, drives, walls, fences, hedges and gates.
We insure holiday homes on a new for old, ‘rebuild cost' basis. This means if the property was damaged beyond repair in a total loss claim, policyholders are covered for the cost of reconstructing the property back to its original form. This handy feature also covers architect and surveyor costs. We can cover properties with a rebuild cost of up to £500,000.

How can I get cheaper holiday home insurance cover?
Keeping your holiday home extra secure is a great way to reduce the cost of insurance. Leisuredays offers security discounts to holiday home owners who fit an alarm system (maintained annually) to their property.
We also reward claim free customers with a discounted premium.
Plus, you could be eligible for a reduced premium if you don't let out your property, or of course benefit from our multi property saving if you insure more than one holiday home.
