Poll: Do you cut your own grass?

In the tranquil world of holiday caravan life, where many owners retreat to their park for some relaxation there lies a question: Do you cut your own grass?

Do not Mow sign

Generally cutting the grass around your pitch will be taken care of by your park operator as part of your pitch fees. But we’ve seen signs on some caravan or lodge pitches that ask holiday park maintenance staff not to cut the grass suggesting some caravan owners appear to want to get out the lawnmower themselves. Are you one of them? And if so what drives this preference, and what are the benefits of taking matters into your own hands?

Maintaining your own slice of paradise

Perhaps one reasons for static caravan owners wanting to mow their own grass is the sense of ownership and pride it brings? Afterall, your static caravan might not just be a temporary getaway, it might be your own slice of paradise – a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax.

Taking care of the grass around your home from home might give you a sense of control over your site pitch and make sure that every blade of grass is trimmed to your satisfaction.

Or perhaps you find mowing the grass therapeutic, and a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction of creating a neatly manicured lawn?

In our new community poll, we’d like to know if you mow your own grass or if you let the park do it.

  1. I like to keep my grass short, the park has a ride on mower which doesn’t cut it as short as i want,it’s nice to have a nice well kept space to relax in when we’re at the van.

  2. We have only been in our abi Wimbledon static for 3months but will be
Cutting and feeding or grass this year

  3. I cut mine because I can’t bear the cuttings left all over the lawn also they cut it when wet so it leave large troughs or wheel marks and patches of mud or the mower person is so gun hoo they whack your decking or van. I go into panic mid when I hear a mower near by.

  4. I enjoying keeping it neat and short and taking pride in my garden and outside area something I can not do at home because we have Astro turf so we can spend more time at my happy place

  5. Cut our own as the maintenance at Coldingham Nay Leisure Park has
Gone right downhill over last few years. Park is a mess now. The management only care about the parts as you come in near where there showgrown is

  6. I would like the park to do the bulk of the cutting but they don’t cut the edges or places where it’s difficult to get a ride on mower in. I would like more attention to detail.

  7. The park maintenance team use strimmers and these machines have damaged our lodge. We had a broken large lounge window and the decking supports have been slightly damaged. Apparently at the time they didn’t have smaller mowers, only ride on machines.
Also previously our grass is not maintained regularly and looks untidy, so we have carried on keeping our area tidy. This years site fees have gone up far too much and those owners who objected have felt threatened!
They have recently redeveloped a section of the park close to us, and as these are big expensive lodges they get preferential treatment.

They replaced the broken window at their expense, possibly insurance!

  8. Cut my own as have a lot of pride in our static and it looks better than when park cut with ride on mower plus strimming around the van is done with a lot more care and looks a lot neater

  9. I cut the grass around my van as I wouldn’t like the gardener to have an accident as it is now a health and safety risk. Shorefield widened the road to get new cables in the ground for their new development. This has left me 6 inches of grass on the corner of my van, so anyone can fall onto the road 6 foot below.

  10. Same reason as Paul Bond above, the site cutters leave the cuttings all over the place which then get taken into the lodge.

  11. We do cut our grass around our van, it is occasionally cut by the site owners, but we find being shorter the grass drys out quicker and you are not carrying grass cuttings into the van.

  12. The camp cut the grass with no box which leaves cuttings all over the place these cuttings get on your feet and into caravan cutting it myself leaves no mess and I do not cut on a wet day which also helps

  13. Cut our grass and collect cuttings as park use ride on mower and a ordinary one with no collection box, so grass left for us to clear up

  14. cut ours to keep tidy and relaxed. The park will tend on a monthly basis, but within 2metres its deemed ‘ours’..
Looks nicer when cut and cleared.. Helps define OUR space !

  15. The parks ride on mowers don’t cut it properly, they can’t cut the bank or into tight areas. The strimmers do a lot of damage to the underpinning – workers are not careful. Not done often enough.

  16. Site rules – not allowed to use a mower but can strim up to 2 feet around our van where the site ride -on mower can’t cut.

  17. It is usual for us to cut our own grass. The park owners cut it one year during lock down and charged us for it

  18. Like many other folk who have commented, our park doesn’t cut the grass short enough so I do it myself. I also strim around the areas that the park don’t often do.

  19. With the parks consent I replaced the grass with large stone, I’d much rather have kept grass but unfortunately the maintenance team were leaving the lodge looking in a proper mess leaving grass literally all over it, even taking a few gauges in places.

Grass was being trodden on and brought into the lodge as well as chunks left on the walkway outside which caused slips.
The grass should be collected and taken to a drop off designated area.

  20. The park says we have to cut the grass around your vans and I am glad about that as the park has a ride on mower with a grass box which they do not attach and therefore the communal grass looks a mess.I take a lot of pride in my van and pitch.

  21. We are responsible for 1metre all round the van and the park cut where the cars park

    1. We are responsible for cutting the grass between the caravans. The site is responsible for communal areas. I prefer it that way.

  22. The park owner (the council) make a mess of cutting my lawn and I’m responsible for 50cm from the van

  23. I cut my own grass as when they use the strimmmers they don’t care where mess goes plus they smashed back window on my 4×4 and they make such a mess with the ride on mowers they untidy is an understatement

  24. The park owner cuts the grass every Friday just before everyone arrives for the weekend
So it gets trampled into the van
We have asked him not to do by our vans and do all the gardening ourselves
