The security measures static caravan owners rely on the most

When it comes to protecting a static caravan, it seems many owners believe the simplest measures are still among the most effective.

We recently asked Leisuredays readers which security measures they rely on most when they’re away from their static caravan.

The results revealed that owners place just as much faith in site security and basic locks as they do in modern technology.

The static caravan security poll results

The joint winners were site security and gates and standard window catches and door locks, both receiving 24% of the votes.

The results suggest that many static caravan owners value the reassurance of a secure holiday park and good-quality physical security over more sophisticated systems.

While CCTV (14% of the votes) and monitored alarms such as Ramtech certainly have their place, the basics remain a key part of protecting a holiday caravan.

Community counts for a lot

Interestingly, one in five respondents said they relied on trusted neighbours or site staff.

It’s a reminder that one of the benefits of owning a static caravan is being part of a community. Friendly neighbours, attentive park staff and regular visitors can often spot anything out of the ordinary and raise the alarm if needed.

Several readers echoed this sentiment in the comments: Emma P said she relies on “staff and the gates“, while Tom Fernie commented that he’s “happy with the vigilance of staff and neighbours“.

Many owners clearly take comfort in knowing people are keeping an eye on things when they’re not there. Combined with site security measures such as gates, barriers and controlled access, it’s easy to see why community-based security ranked so highly in our poll.

This strong showing for neighbours and site staff also suggests that, while technology such as CCTV and alarms has its place, human eyes and ears remain one of the most trusted forms of security on holiday parks.

What readers told us

Several readers shared the security measures they use on top of those listed in the poll.

Whilst some highlighted the importance of site security, one respondent questioned how effective it can be on certain parks, commenting that gates and a single security guard don’t always provide complete protection.

One owner said they use an internal CCTV and alarm system, while another explained they have a camera positioned inside their caravan monitoring the doors.

Other ideas included patio door security bars, chains and padlocks securing decking furniture, internal Ring cameras and internal temperature monitoring devices that can also help identify issues while away.

The responses show there is no one-size-fits-all approach, with many owners combining several layers of security for extra peace of mind.

Theft claims are relatively uncommon

While it’s understandable to be concerned about the security of your static caravan or holiday lodge, the good news is that theft from static caravans is relatively uncommon.

The combination of secure holiday parks, occupied sites, controlled access and vigilant communities means most owners enjoy their static caravans without experiencing any security-related incidents.

That doesn’t mean security should be overlooked, but it does suggest that sensible precautions, good site security and appropriate insurance can go a long way towards providing reassurance.

Protecting your static caravan

Every static caravan and holiday park is different, so it’s worth considering which security measures are most appropriate for your circumstances. A combination of secure locks, site security, lighting, surveillance and trusted people nearby can all help reduce the risk of theft or damage.

And while preventative measures are important, having the right insurance in place is equally valuable. Static caravan insurance can help protect your static caravan against a range of unforeseen events, including theft, storm damage, flooding, accidental damage and vandalism.
