Few outdoor experiences can beat the freedom of travelling around by bike, especially when you have a bit of extra power to tap into. An e-bike can certainly complement the static caravan or holiday lodge lifestyle – allowing you to explore further afield as well as coming in handy for more local trips.
What is an e-bike?
Put simply, a bike of any style becomes an e-bike when it has a motor to complement its pedal power.
What it does mean is you can have a bit of extra help on a bike ride, whatever the terrain, when needed. E-bikes are also referred to as electric bikes, pedelecs and EPACs (Electric Pedal Assisted Cycles).
Technically, an e-bike has a motor that’s restricted to 250Watts that will provide power for up to 15.6mph as far as road use is concerned (you can pedal faster without motor assistance should you want, and you can only receive powered assistance over 4mph when pedalling).

Top tips for choosing an e-bike
- Consider the kind of bike riding you’re looking to do – popping down to the local shops or longer haul? Also, what kind of terrain are you going to encounter?
- Make friends with any specialist e-bike retailers near your home or holiday park. They’ll advise on more than just the right size, as well as offering test rides. They’re also essential when it comes to aftersales service…think of it as not just a question of cost to buy, but the cost of ownership.
- Comfort is another key factor. Make sure any e-bike you buy fits your size, of course. And generally, the bigger the wheels, the better the ride. Again, this is where a specialist retailer comes in.
- On the same theme, make sure any e-bike supplier you end up buying from can offer proper back-up. You may find cheap products online because they have no UK offices etc, which is fine until the time comes that you want a replacement part and/or any servicing work doing.
- Do understand what’s road legal and what’s not. Be sure to tell any retailer that you want to use it on the road.
- Pre-owned and/or ex-demonstrator models can be a good deal, especially if they also come with a decent warranty. Even better if they come with a new battery. Think of it as: mechanically, if they’ve not been used equals good; electrically, if they’ve not been used equals bad.
- For folding e-bikes, you’re likely to end up with smaller wheels which are better for storing in your static caravan storage box, but ride comfort can be diminished.
What about insurance?
In most cases we’d suggest either speaking to your home insurer or an e-bike insurance specialist.

Also, Estarli Cycle Security means a GPS tracker can be added at the build stage.

Use it on urban roads, as well as trails; it’s designed for riders of any height between 5ft 4in and 6ft 5in.
It has a 250Watt rear hub motor from Bafang, with Shimano seven-speed gears. Typical range is 25 miles.

I’m someone who owns a caravan at Sunnyside Park in Seaford and I don’t think our Park rules allow them …. certainly don’t want anyone riding them around the park itself as too many ride them too fast. Walk the bikes while in the Park is fine but no riding – even slowly ! It’s bad enough avoiding them on normal roads
